Bringing to light a current situation in the Buffalo/Niagara area in NY.

Joelle R. Kott, owner of PitStop Puppy's Dog Rescue and Boarding Kennel - Buffalo, NewYork

was raided on 01/29/2010 and 60+ dogs were seized total. Dogs were take from both her home and her kennels on suspicion of cruelty and neglect. The Niagara SPCA has promised not to euthanize the dogs. We are currently working with them to find them sancuary, as needed.
She was initiailly charged for endangering her children and they have been removed from the home as well and the County of Niagara has brought animal abuse/neglect/cruelty charges against Ms. Kott. Until these dogs have been given every chance possible and Kott is punished, we will be a voice for those who can not speak for themselves.

THE STORY BEHIND

In late October I started volunteering at PitStop Puppy’s Dog Rescue in Wheatfield, NY.
For the first month or so I participated in a very limited fashion, going to the kennel once a week, assisting at events and walking a couple of dogs at a visit. By the beginning of December both other volunteers quit. The weather was rapidly changing and I began mentally logging a number in inaccuracies in many things I had been told, those things that make you go..hmmm.

Discrepancies included the actual history and ownership of the dogs, the usage of fundraising money and even the health and treatment of the animals. By the second week of December I realize now that red flags were waving everywhere. The owner admitted to owning a number of the dogs at the kennel and those that were not hers belonged primarily to friends and family of hers who had dumped their dogs there. She eventually admitted to studding dogs out of the rescue and to owning and ‘previously’ (lie) breeding or showing many of the dogs.

Then Bruno was viciously attacked and killed 12/18/2009.

The day after this horrific event the shock cleared and I realized. This is crazy, just crazy and had to stop, now. The dogs were starting to decline in body weight rapidly. The heat was not on at the kennel (where was the cash from the last 2 fund raisers to pay the gas deposit?) The heaters were no longer ample enough to fight off the winter. The temperature a foot off the ground according to the thermometer I then placed there was always between 28-36 degrees f. I called some local rescues, posed as someone who was considering adopting a dog from PitStop trying to feel out if I could find an ally. Most were unfamiliar or said nice things. I called the Niagara SPCA. I called the dog warden in the town of Wheatfield. No one showed up. I called again.
… and again… and
again… and again…
No one showed up. Now the dogs are wallowing in filth, starving and growing more emaciated. They are bleeding out of their bowels. They are infested with parasites. Kott stopped making any safety repairs. My husband and I went there late at night between midnight and 4am constantly. We hauled in hot rice and ground turkey, 2 liters of water, treats and kibble, and kerosene to keep the heaters going. We did this for 5 weeks straight while we waited for someone to come help these dogs.
Meanwhile I also logged any info, emails, txt messages, voice mails, and photos, anything that would serve to testify that these dogs were being mistreated. I argued with the owner over the condition of the dogs, and harped on their body weight constantly. I thought after six calls to the NSPCA between 01/04/2010 and 01/12/2010 (and those are only the complaints I made personally, I had others call too.) SOMEONE MIGHT SWING BY... but no, no one showed up.
After the night of Bruno’s death I never took her to get another dog, yet the owner took in 24 new animals in 16 days.

Other information now comes to light for me:

~PitStop Puppy’s Dog Rescue INC. does not exist except for a business card and a sign at the road. No DBA, no bank account, no not-for-profit- nothing.

~The reason the NSCPA was not answering my calls is because the investigator assigned to PitStop’s area is Mr. Robert Schildhauer is 22+ year friend of the ‘rescue’s’ owner.

~PitStop’s owner chuckles to me that she sent pictures of her breasts to a certain dog warden in Wheatfield and when her cell phone died he gave her a new one. (I have not confirmed the truth of this.)

~I discovered the neighbors had been complaining for years about the stench, dead animals in the yard, cages a starving bunnies eating one another, and even goats in her basement. (I substantiated that the bunnies were indeed true.)

(Note: There was no c-section, not a single dog was vetted in my 3 months there. She also tries to pawn the litter off as a rescue litter.)

On 01/24/2010 six women showed up at the rescue to offer donations and help. I ran to the first one I saw, got in her face and said.
“Do you consider yourself an intuitive person?”
She didn’t back down and affirmed she indeed was. So I said.
“You have got to help me, they are all going to die, and no one will listen and just come here and see.”

Well they listened, they saw, and they helped.
So January 29th I met the Niagara County Sheriff’s department and the Niagara SPCA at the kennel. They went in, surveyed the situation and then went to her home to begin seizing dogs. After taking both Kott’s dogs and children from her home, they moved to the kennel. Kott was homethe SPCA remove the animals. They were so quiet, as though they knew it was finally over. The Niagara SPCA in total seized over 60 dogs from Kott. She spent the night before the raid hiding dogs in people’s homes, barns, even with me. I called and informed Investigator Mindy Fruehauf a few times in the wee hours of the morning as to where dogs were, and they were picked up the next day as well.

So now while sympathetic stories of a do-gooder who got in over her head swirl, I am sickened. For far too long no one listened to the atrocious truth behind the lie of a rescue. This is why I invited you hear, to make sure that as many people as are willing to listen do listen, and keep listening.
