A drug bust in Independence, Kansas led the sheriff right into a dog fighting operation. Now two men are behind bars and 22 dogs were taken into custody. A Lawrence rescue group is now working with the dogs, hoping to give them a new life.

Game Dog Guardian, a rescue group in Lawrence, works with dogs rescued from fighting operations. The group treats and tests the dogs to make sure they are tame enough to be adopted out.

"As soon as we feel comfortable with them then they'll be available for adoption," adoption director Katie Bray said.

Almost all the dogs except one, an aggressive German Shepherd, were taken into the group's care. The group hopes the others can be trained and adopted.

It will take some time to heal some of the dogs, like Hercules, who were hurt both physically and mentally.

"A lot of times we give him a hug and see how they'll react and he's basically just really scared right now," Anthony Barnett said.

But the group says their efforts are worth it.

"These dog fighting dogs are victims of abuse," Barnett said. "Some of them can't be in society but they deserve a chance to be evaluated and see if they can be placed."

Some of the dogs are already available for adoption and others still need some work. If you're interested in finding out more about the dogs available for adoption following the dog fighting bust in Montgomery County, Kansas:

Case Updates

Sixteen lucky dogs that were rescued from a Kansas dog-fighting operation are looking for the best New Years gift ever " a forever home.

The dogs were taken during a drug raid in October where two Montgomery County men were charged with crimes relating to dog-fighting. Previously, dogs taken from such a situation would have been euthanized without question as they would have been deemed too violent to be placed with normal families. However, as we have seen with possibly the most famous ex-fighting dogs, those once belonging to Michael Vick, once the dogs are shown what it is to be loved and treated with respect they can change their behavior.

"The criminal justice system plays a vital role in making sure that dog-fighters are punished to the fullest extent of the law and prevented from going on to victimize more innocent animals in the future," said Animal Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Stephen Wells. "But these dogs don't just need justice " they also need a second chance. We hope the compassionate people of Kansas and Missouri will consider making the lifesaving " and life changing " choice to adopt one of these rescued dogs and give them a new lease on life on 2011."

The dogs were subjected to horrific abuse, yet have been temperament tested as suitable for living with families, and are now ready to find a permanent home.

If you live in the Kansas or Missouri areas and are able to offer a permanent and loving home to one of these dogs, please contact Katie Barnett at 785-832-8100 or katie@gamedogguardian.com
